The impact of COVID19 on the mobility of legal professionals in Belgium
Many candidates and clients ask us about the impact of the COVID-19 measures on the legal labour market. Candidates wonder whether this is the right time to change jobs and if there are still interesting legal vacancies. At the same time, clients wonder whether candidates dare to take the plunge in these teleworking times.
During the recent months, we at YouConnect have seen evidence that every crisis offers opportunities, and that many candidates and clients have also found each other during this unusual period. To substantiate our findings, we kept track of the figures on the mobility of legal professionals over the last few months.
Our Legal labor market survey of 2019 already showed us that legal professionals with a few years of work experience, change jobs faster than legal professionals with more work experience.
In our most recent research based on nearly 5,000 LinkedIn profiles, this is confirmed again.
Legal professionals with 1 to 2 years of work experience still change jobs often, even in COVID-19 times. For example, our sample shows that almost 50% have changed jobs in the last 12 months (April 2020-March 2021), compared to only 38% in the period October 2019-September 2020.
Among legal professionals with 3-5 years of experience, we notice a slight increase: 31% changed jobs during the period April 2020-March 2021, while only 27% of them changed jobs during the period October 2019-September 2020.
Among legal professionals with 6-10 years of experience, we do not observe an increase in job rotation. Both in the period October 2019-September 2020 and in the period April 2020-March 2021, an average of 18% changed jobs.
Finally, when we look at the legal professionals with more than 10 years of work experience, 7% changed jobs in the last 12 months, which is roughly in line with the figures from 6 months ago.
We can conclude that COVID-19 has not prevented legal professionals, and especially younger legal professionals, from choosing a new employer. And although not obvious in remote times, good onboarding is even more crucial to make this move a successful retention story.
