What is your position at YouConnect?
Trainee Recruiter.

What did you do before you started at YouConnect?
I’m a student and I’m in the second year of my master’s in business psychology at the University of Ghent. Almost finished, but I’m still not 100% sure what direction I want to go in.

What is your daily motivation?
The desire to grow in my studies and gain knowledge so that later I can use this background to help people and make them happy.

What do you think are the most important skills a recruitment consultant should have?
Empathy, being critical, and perseverance.

What makes YouConnect so unique as a company?
All consultants invest quite some time in the candidates. They see to it that each and everyone of them gets the attention they need during their journey with the company. Next to that, within YouConnect, I see that a lot of trust is given to employees, something I’ve never experienced anywhere else before.

How would you describe the atmosphere among colleagues at YouConnect?
Very open, friendly, there really is a great team spirit.

What is your favorite workplace and why?
An open and familiar workplace in a smaller company. Because of corona, I mainly work at home, or very occasionally if the rules permit, a day at the office in Ghent.

Where do you think the challenge lies in our sector?
We mustn’t only look at what is on paper but also take into account the candidate’s growth potential, the inner motivation, and the skills.

What are your ambitions within YouConnect?
To complete a good internship and be able to add value to the YouConnect team. To assist the HR team in their activities and, of course, to learn a lot.

Do you have a creative side? If so, how is that expressed?
In my childhood, I always liked to draw. The problem was that I had too many ideas in my head, which I found difficult to work out. I decided to take a drawing course. Today, I make jewelry from clay finished with metallic paint and weave chains to hang my gemstones on. I make this mostly for myself, but very occasionally I work on orders for friends.

What is your favorite season and why?
Summer! I live on the Belgian coast, in Ostend. Although there are often a lot of tourists walking around, I can still enjoy the sea, the beach, the walks on the dike, and eating an ice cream. In general, I feel better and happier in the summer.

Are you an early bird or a night owl?
I’m definitely an evening person. After 8 pm I can often start painting, writing, reading, or playing a game on PlayStation. I feel I have more energy than during the day itself.

What is your record on the 5 km?
No idea actually. I never run with a certain distance in mind, but more by feel and usually more than 5 km. My record distance is 14 km in just under 1.5 hours. My favorite running place is the dike of Ostend.

What was your last online purchase?
A new diary. My old one is completely full.

What is your favorite Eurovision song?
The song "Euphoria" by the Swedish Loreen. The lyrics and the video clip are just really good, and it doesn't sound like a Eurosong song at all.

What is the ultimate dream for yourself? What would you like to do one day that you have never done before?
Travel around the world and experience all the different cultures. After his studies, my brother went traveling around South America for six months. And I want to do that too! I would love to go to Asia to focus on yoga.

What is your dream for the world in general?
That humanity was more aware of the importance of conserving and especially restoring the rainforest. When I saw the images of the fires last year (which may have been lit on purpose), it broke my heart, and I made a donation. The rainforest is the only way to keep our climate and the earth in balance. So why don't we do more?

Do you believe in coincidence?
After reading the books of Abraham Hicks (Law of Attraction), I do believe that we are partly in control, but I still feel that somewhere there is something that sends us to certain things without us being able to influence it. Some things are just so weird that it can't be anything else but coincidence.

What is your strongest sense?
No idea, but I can tell you what my worst one is: smell. My sense of smell doesn’t work at all and hasn’t worked since birth. What you don't know, you don't miss, but I am aware that I miss certain sensations. It can also be dangerous or difficult because I can't smell gas and someone has to help me choose my perfume.

Do you hold on to certain rituals? If so, what are they?
I try to meditate for 10 minutes every morning on letting go of expectations and just letting everything come to me.

Which celebrity would you like to interview?
Keanu Reeves, the lead in the science fiction trilogy The Matrix. I read he is the highest-paid actor of all time, yet he is very down to earth and doesn't behave like a big star. He goes to work by metro and donates part of his money to charity. He is very conscious in life, unlike many other Hollywood actors.

If you could go back in time, which time would you go to?
Ancient Egypt! Preferably I would be a priestess who could communicate with the gods. I have always been fascinated by mythology and ancient Egypt. I recently ordered a book on how to read hieroglyphics.

What film or TV series would you like to have been in?
Avatar: The Last Airbender, or the Legend of Korra. When I was little, I wanted to be a waterbender so badly, and yes, it is quite funny but I often tried to waterbend in the swimming pool.

Which historical character would you like to have met?
Joan of Arc! Legend has it that she heard the voices of saints and also fought in the war dressed as a man. What a strong and intriguing woman!

Do you prefer to cook for yourself or eat out?
I’ve been a vegetarian for five years now, and my main motivation is to protect animals and the environment. At the time, I participated in the 40-day challenge to eat vegetarian and I've stayed in it, so to speak. I just eat at the table with my parents and eat meat substitutes.

Imagine waking up tomorrow and suddenly having one new good quality or skill, what would it be?
Aerial acrobatics. I've always wanted to hang in those ribbons, and as a bonus, I get super limber.

If you could be an animal, which would you choose?
A cheetah: they are the fastest in the world and they are also very tough.

Which book do you think everyone should read?
Fiction: A Brave New World. A story that makes you think about what the world would be like if everything was conditioned down to the last detail and technology was at the center of it all.

Non-Fiction: The Empath's Survival Guide.
