At YouConnect, we speak daily with legal, HR, and compliance professionals. We don’t just guide them through recruitment processes; we also actively think along with them about their careers in the medium and long term. This ongoing dialogue gives us a sharp insight into the questions, doubts, and sensitivities candidates commonly face.

With this article, we are launching a new FAQ series in which we provide clear, well-founded answers to those recurring questions. We’re kicking off with a topic that may arise during recruitment processes: dismissal.

Should I be honest about my dismissal from my previous employer?

You are not necessarily expected to bring up a dismissal spontaneously, but chances are high that at some point during a recruitment process you will be asked about the reason for leaving your current or previous employer. This is a perfectly logical question: a potential employer wants to understand the context in which you are looking for a new professional challenge in order to assess whether there could be a long-term match.

Being well prepared for this question is therefore essential. Transparency is a key guiding principle here. A dismissal is rarely a black-and-white story. In many cases, several factors were at play, and some of them may have been beyond your control. By being honest, you stay in control of the narrative and can provide the necessary nuance and context yourself. Our tip: keep your explanation objective and concise. Avoid negative language when speaking about your former employer and instead focus on what you have learned from the experience (growth mindset).

Our experience shows that the real reason for a departure often comes to light anyway, sometimes even during the recruitment process itself. If this happens without you having explained the situation yourself, or if you have even stated that you left voluntarily, it can lead to distrust or even the early termination of your application. Trust is, after all, the foundation of any strong working relationship. Unfortunately, we have seen this happen more than once.

By communicating openly, you avoid a potential employer hearing the story through other channels or in a different interpretation. Our experience also shows that many employers actually respond with appreciation and empathy when a dismissal is communicated transparently. In other words, it does not automatically jeopardise your chances of finding a new position.

In short, honesty works in your favour, both in conversations with a recruiter and with a potential employer. When you work with a recruiter from YouConnect, we act as a trusted intermediary: we listen to your story and help you communicate it clearly and transparently to a potential employer.
