#ProudConnector Unveiled: Fien Stepman | Legal Recruitment Consultant
What is your function at YouConnect?
Legal Recruitment Consultant.
What was your job before you started at YouConnect?
I was a lawyer and specialised in estate planning and family conflicts. It was a very interesting field and I worked in a nice office, but I missed the contact with people.
What attracted you to your role at YouConnect?
The social and connecting aspect of the job. You build up relationships with people, both candidates and companies, and that gives me energy. The trust, autonomy and flexibility YouConnect offers are also big plus points.
Where do you prefer to work and why?
Without a doubt at our new office in Ghent at the Nederkouter. I love being in Ghent and the new office is so beautiful.
Which characteristic do you value most in your conversation partner?
I really appreciate openness and authenticity. Not only do these two qualities create a relationship of trust very quickly, but you can also help people much more effectively. I like to know who I am dealing with and openness often makes for interesting conversations.
What is your favourite season and why?
Spring! Winter has ended, the days are getting longer, people get out more, there are lots of fun things to do and we look forward to the prospect of months of beautiful weather. It could also be because I was born in May and I really love celebrating my birthday.
Are you an early bird or an evening person?
My favourite resolution on 1 January get up earlier (or just on time). It seems so nice to not be in a hurry as soon as I wake up in the morning, but it is hopeless. I think I'd better put that resolution away. So I am an evening person.
What is your record on the 5 km?
Oh dear, I'm not a very fast runner. My old NikeRunner app says it is 26 minutes and 50 seconds, but that was several years ago. I prefer to run slower and longer distances (with a lower heart rate).
What is your favourite ice cream flavour?
I eat and drink almost anything and I love to try new dishes and recipes. But when it comes to ice cream, I always go for the old school vanilla flavour. I do like to combine it with a new undiscovered flavour.
Which things annoy you the most?
People who nag about unimportant things and who are pessimistic for no reason. And also long waiting queues.
Which film or TV series would you like to have played in?
I do a bit of acting myself so I tend to think of fun roles rather than good films or series. For example, the role of Jess in New Girl seems like so much fun.
How do you like to spend your weekends?
I like busy weekends. Friday evening after work I usually fly straight in: after-work drinks with friends or colleagues, go out for dinner and end up at a party. Saturday morning I prefer not to have any obligations. On Sunday mornings I like to get up early to go for a run and then, for example, to the flower market at the Kouter in Ghent. I like to end the weekend on the couch with my boyfriend and takeaway.
Are you a nature or city person?
Walking around in a city gives me a lot of energy but I can also immensely enjoy the beauty of nature. That is also the reason why I live in Gentbrugge: near the city centre in Ghent and next to the Gentbrugse Meersen. When I travel, I always try to find the combination of nature and the city.
Which book do you think everyone should read?
“A little life” by Yanagihara or “Max, Mischa and the Tet Offensive” by Johan Harstad. Both of them are thick, but they are real page-turners. I was fully immersed in the story. To such an extent that I felt a little empty after finishing them. As a non-fiction book, I would recommend “Human kind A Hopeful History” by Rutger Bregman.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Eating filet americain with a spoon straight out of the jar and watching Temptation Island. With a little bit of shame, I have to admit that “De Verhulstjes” have also made it to my list of guilty pleasures.
