Recruitment: More than just a chat

Recruitment is often seen as a simple process of conducting interviews with candidates and clients. But anyone who thinks it ends there seriously underestimates the profession. Recruitment is a true expertise, one that demands knowledge, experience and a solid skillset. It’s not something you master overnight.

A craft in its own right

Recruitment is about more than just talking to people. It requires deep insight into the market, sector-specific knowledge, and a sharp eye for talent. A recruiter makes the right match between candidate and company and that goes far beyond a CV or first impression. It’s about understanding motivations, assessing potential, and advising both candidates and clients.

Psychology plays a major role. What drives someone to change jobs? What are a candidate’s true motivators? How do you help a company see the value in a candidate who may not tick every box on paper, but is actually a perfect fit in practice? A good recruiter thinks strategically, guides people through their careers, and keeps the client’s interests clearly in focus.

Perseverance is key

One of the most important competencies in recruitment is perseverance. This profession requires staying power. Candidates drop out, clients change their expectations, and sometimes all your efforts seem in vain. But a strong recruiter doesn’t give up. They adapt, they learn, and they keep going, again and again.

Every search brings its own set of challenges. Sometimes you need to think creatively, view the market from a different angle, or give a candidate that extra nudge. Recruitment is a rollercoaster of disappointments and successes. But those who stick with it and apply the right methods will make a real difference.

After 20 years in the field, I can honestly say: perseverance now outweighs even active listening and empathy. Those qualities still matter deeply but on their own, they’re no longer enough.

Knowledge and skill

A recruiter must be more than just a good communicator. Analytical thinking, commercial awareness and strategic acumen are all essential. The job demands expertise in HR, legal frameworks, employer branding, and assessment methods. Without this foundation, recruitment quickly becomes an aimless and ineffective exercise.

That’s why recruitment is a craft. An expertise that’s built through experience, training, and continuous development. A recruiter who take their profession seriously can make a real impact in today’s increasingly competitive job market.

Recruitment is anything but ‘just a chat’. It’s a profession where you can have real impact on businesses, on careers, and on people’s lives. And in 2025, it requires more perseverance than ever. As a seasoned professional in this niche field, let me end with an old saying: new brooms sweep clean, but old ones know the corners. So, if you’re about to entrust someone with your next hire, make sure they know the craft.

Call me passionate about the job or just plain mad. I’m fine with both.
