The insurance sector in transition: why new talent is crucial and how YouConnect can help.

worth sharing insurance
The insurance sector – ranging from insurers, brokers and reinsurers to insurtech players and specialised service providers – is currently facing a growing tension between the demand for and supply of talent. The demand for experienced and specialised profiles is increasing, while available talent remains scarce and difficult to reach.

At the same time, we notice that the potential of this sector is still insufficiently known among a broader audience. Too few professionals consider a career in insurance, simply because they are unaware of what the sector has to offer.

That is exactly why we at YouConnect have decided to expand our services to insurance profiles. Not only to support companies in their search for talent, but also to actively contribute to attracting new profiles into this sector.

With my background of 11 years as a Financial Lines Underwriter, I know the sector from the inside. I have experienced myself how intellectually challenging, versatile and relevant this world is. Today, I see a clear opportunity to make an impact again – this time through recruitment.

In this article, I will further elaborate on:

  1. The challenges and opportunities within the insurance market
  2. What we at YouConnect concretely offer
  3. How YouConnect makes the difference

1. The challenges and opportunities within the insurance market

Structural challenges

Our market analysis shows clear trends:

  • structural talent shortages
  • a relatively closed market where “who knows who” still often prevails
  • limited inflow of profiles from outside the sector
  • ageing workforce: a large group of experienced professionals is approaching the end of their careers
  • increasing competition between players, putting upward pressure on salaries

This combination makes it increasingly difficult for companies in the insurance sector to attract the right profiles.

Time to look differently at the insurance world: an underestimated sector

What has always personally fascinated me about the insurance sector is how versatile and intellectually stimulating it is, something that is still too often underestimated.

When I started as a junior underwriter in 2010, I myself had no clear idea of what the job entailed. But I quickly realised how broad and challenging the work truly is. I combined legal and financial analysis, commercial considerations and strategic thinking.

Today, we see that many talented people simply do not consider this sector, not because of a lack of interest, but because they are never exposed to it.

And that is precisely where an important opportunity lies: making people aware of what this sector truly has to offer.

The insurance world is unfairly perceived as “less sexy”, which contrasts sharply with what the sector actually offers:

  • Stability and security
A robust sector that is less sensitive to economic cycles compared to other industries
  • Intellectual complexity and variety
From cyber risks to M&A transactions and international claims
  • Strong growth opportunities
Both vertically (management roles) and horizontally (specialisations, international context)
  • Relevance and impact
Insurance plays a crucial role in protecting businesses and therefore our economy

2. What does YouConnect offer?

At YouConnect, we guide candidates towards a role that truly suits them and allows them to fully realise their potential. We build strong connections between companies on the one hand and legal, HR and compliance professionals on the other, including within the insurance sector.

With the expansion towards insurance technical profiles, we continue building on what we have been doing for 13 years: creating qualitative and sustainable connections within an area of expertise in which we ourselves have previously been professionally active.

For us, this step feels logical. Our ambition is to be a long-term partner that genuinely adds value for both clients and candidates.

We focus on profiles such as:

  • Underwriters (including Financial Lines, Cyber, Property, Marine)
  • Claims Managers and Claims Advisors
  • Underwriting Managers
  • Commercial insurance profiles

Our approach always starts with a thorough analysis of:

  • organisation and culture
  • role content
  • the broader market context

We combine our own database with an active network and targeted search strategies to identify the right candidates.

But where we truly make a difference is through our broader perspective. We deliberately look beyond the traditional insurance market and also identify “out of the box” profiles, talent from other sectors. We take the time to guide these candidates and provide detailed explanations about both the role and the sector.

Precisely because the inflow from outside the sector is currently limited, we see this as an important lever.

We consciously position ourselves as a sparring partner.

For clients, this means:

  • thinking along about the feasibility of profiles
  • advising on the positioning of the role within the market
  • transparency regarding expectations and timing

For candidates, this means:

  • gaining insight into the sector
  • guidance with a possible career switch
  • honest feedback and long-term advice

3. How does YouConnect make the difference?

In a market where many players approach the same candidates, the difference lies in approach, vision and quality.

3.1 A thoughtful, human approach

We believe that recruitment is not about transactions, but about sustainable connections.

‘We forge quality connections that enhance professional life, with precision, passion and purpose’.

Concretely, this means:

  • no “one size fits all” solutions
  • in-depth conversations with both candidates and clients
  • focus on long-term matches, not quick placements

3.2 Combination of expertise and insight

Our consultants combine:

  • market knowledge
  • in-depth expertise
  • a strong network

This enables us to:

  • properly challenge and advise candidates
  • support clients as a true sparring partner

3.3 Quality and transparency as the standard

Our processes are built around quality:

  • thorough screening and competency-based interviews
  • extensive and well-founded candidate reports
  • transparent communication throughout the entire process

In addition, we remain involved even after the placement, through follow-up and feedback moments.

Conclusion

The insurance sector is facing major recruitment challenges. At the same time, this creates significant opportunities.

At YouConnect, we are convinced that the key lies in:

  • attracting new talent
  • correctly positioning the sector
  • and building sustainable connections

With our expansion towards insurance technical profiles, we want to actively contribute to this.
